Best Dart Accessories of 2022: A Buyer’s Guide

Dart Accessories

So you're ready to start playing darts.

You order some darts and a dartboard online, and boom! You're ready to go. Right?

At the bare minimum, yes. All you technically need to play darts are darts and a board.

Sure, you could play darts with nothing more than the basic necessities, but you might not fully enjoy the experience. And, there are actually a lot of different accessories for darts that most people (especially beginners) never even consider.

For instance, when you're throwing all those darts at the board, what happens when you miss one and it puts a hole in the wall? Or, when your darts bounce out the board and scratch up your hardwood floors.

This is why I always recommend people pickup at least some of the basic dart accessories. There's equipment for everything from protecting your walls and floors, to making your darts last longer and repairing them when they break.

But I'll be honest. You don't need every single accessory out there. Some are more for convenience, while others are must-haves in my opinion. But don't worry, I'll walk you through all the different dart accessories I recommend, and show you my top picks for each.

Let's dive in!

Dartboard Backboards

Whether you consider yourself an expert dart player or a beginner, there are going to be accidents and mishaps.

Some of these accidents and mishaps might involve not even hitting the board every time, which can absolutely destroy your walls, doors, or the surface that you have the board hanging on.

As a beginner, this is something that you will experience frequently, which is why you need a dart backboard.

A backboard will not only protect your wall, but they can also protect your darts as well if you're hanging your board on a concrete or stone surface.

Hitting these surfaces will not only cause your darts to bounce off and hit the floor, but it could potentially destroy them.

dart holes in wall

This is why you need a dart backboard

Is it necessary: Absolutely. Do not play darts without a backboard to protect your walls.

Necessity: 100%
Viper Championship Wood Framed Dartboard Backboard Set

In my search for the perfect backboard, I discovered that there were tons available, but the best one that I came across was the Viper Championship Wood Framed Dartboard Backboard set.

Not only does it come with the backboard that you need, but it includes a variety of other accessories like a dry erase scoreboard and a pouch that hold 4 different sets of darts.

When you combine this with the beautiful mahogany finish, it's hard to beat the value you get from it.

Darts Grip Wax

There is nothing more frustrating for throwers than losing their grip on a dart. This mishap is most often caused by sweaty palms and fingertips associated with nerves and tension.

When I first started with darts, this was a huge problem for me. I found myself continuously wiping my hands with a towel after almost every throw. It was super inconvenient.

After speaking to my more experienced throwers, I discovered grip wax. This product is designed to resist moisture, so you can keep a firm grip on the dart.

Is it necessary: If you have an issue with sweaty hands/palms and can't grip darts well, absolutely. Otherwise, it's just a nice-to-have dart accessory.

Necessity: 80%
Sportswaxx Pink Wax

Sportswaxx Pink Wax is highly recommended by professional dart throwers. The wax is applied to the fingertips as often as needed to provide a firm grip.

The biggest benefit of this wax is that it doesn't hinder your throwing speed. So, you can play as usual, but without losing grip on your dart.

The wax comes in a convenient container to create a tight seal. This helps prevent the wax from drying out, while giving you quick and easy access when you need it.

I typically remove the lid and stick the container in my shirt pocket, so I can access the wax at will. This allows me to wax my fingertips and avoid downtime.

You just have to apply it once and you'll have a noticeable difference in your grip. It does a great job of keeping my darts from slipping, which is probably why so many of the pros love this wax.

Dart Case

If you are anything like me, you probably like experimenting around with different styles of darts until you find that perfect match.

While some darts are extremely durable and reliable, they do tend to wear out if you use them quite frequently. When I find myself in a competitive mode, the last thing I want is to break my darts and have to switch to a different style dart.

This not only throws off my game, but it gets me all flustered. However, with my handy dart case, this is something that I never have to worry about, because I have all my darts and repair parts right in one convenient place.

Is it necessary: You have to store your darts somewhere, so I'd say it's a pretty high necessity. Especially if you play darts at bars or a friend's house.

Necessity: 95%
Casemaster Classic Dart Travel Case

The Casemaster Classic 12 Dart Nylon Travel/Storage Case is without a doubt a huge lifesaver.

With the ability to hold 4 sets of darts, a ton of accessories, and 5 storage tubes, you will literally have everything that you need right in one easy to access location.

In addition to this, the case comes with a durable black nylon exterior, which keeps moisture at bay.

And I'm not going to lie. After going through so many crappy dart accessories and products over the years, I pretty much only buy equipment that comes with a warranty these days. And this case comes with a 90-day guarantee, which is pretty hard to beat.

Dart Mats

A dart mart is without a doubt something that every dart enthusiast should consider investing in. While it might not be absolutely necessary, it can prevent you from having to mark the floor with tape or paint.

In addition to this, there are times when a mat can save your wood floor from holes due to bounce outs.

If you have a concrete floor, a mat could potentially extend the lifespan of your darts. After a while of bouncing off hard floors, your dart tips will really wear down and won't stick as well. So mats are a solid investment.

These convenient mats can be rolled up and stored in a closet when they are not in use, but some are so elegant that players just leave them in place because they tie the room together.

Is it necessary: Definitely, especially if you play darts in a room without soft carpet.

Necessity: 90%
Viper Padded Dart Mat

I've tried a lot of different solutions for dart mats, including making my own. But without a doubt, the best option I've found so far is the Viper Padded Dart Mat.

This mat is made of soft, cushioned vinyl, and it is actually padded, so it goes a long way in protecting your floors from bounce outs and providing comfort if you like to play in socks or barefooted.

The mat provides you with a regulated distance embossed toe line, so you never have to measure and mark out the toe line distance on your floor, which saves you tons of time and eliminates guesswork. You can simply roll out the mat and go right to playing.

Dart Throw Lines

All dart throwers, especially beginners, are always trying to improve their throwing accuracy. With this said, experimenting with a laser dart throw line and practice is key to making this happen.

I have discovered that dart throw lines are an essential accessory for both competitive and casual dart players. In fact, I utilize the laser to mark my toe and throw lines. And, it works remarkably well after a bit of practice.

Is it necessary: Honestly, it's a nice-to-have but if you're just looking to play darts for fun and aren't super competitive, it's not totally necessary. But if you're working on improving your accuracy, it's a super helpful dart accessory.

Necessity: 70%
Viper Laser Throw Toe Line Marker

Looking to improve accuracy, look no further than the Viper Laser Throw/Toe Line Marker.

This device is a great alternative to the traditional adhesive floor marker, which can be obtrusive at times. The laser beam is bright enough to be seen in low light and bright conditions. Whether you are playing in bright sunlight or in low light conditions, the laser beam is visible.

The Viper Laser Throw Line Marker comes with mounting hardware to eliminate the need to make an additional purchase.

Once you have the laser mounted onto a wall or cabinet, tighten the screws on each side of the laser and it is ready to put to the test.

To eliminate dangerous electrical cables, the marker operates on battery power. I highly recommend the Viper Laser Toe Line Marker for beginners (beyond casual/hobbyists players) who are working on their throw.

Dart Scorers

What’s the point of playing darts if you aren’t going to keep track of the score and play to win?

There's absolutely no reason to keep score with a paper and pencil. For one, who wants to do all that math? And secondly, there are so many different dart games, and each is scored differently. It's a lot to keep up with.

However, this is where dart scorers can come in handy. Dart scoreboards automate the scoring process by letting you enter in your numbers on each throw, and the scorer handles the rest.

It eliminate the guesswork and keeps the game competitive and honest.

Is it necessary: Absolutely. Unless you want to manually track each game, do yourself an favor and pick up a scorer.

Necessity: 100%
Arachnid Touch Pad Dart Scorer dart accessory

There are a variety of different dart scorers available on the market. You have everything from chalkboards to dry erase boards and apps. But the Arachnid Touch Pad Dart Scorer is definitely my favorite.

This electronic touch pad scorer automatically calculates the score of up to a total of 8 players. In addition to this, the scorer is capable of keeping the score for 24 different types of dart games, so you aren't stuck just playing the same game over and over.

Dart Sharpeners

Every player that uses steel tip darts wants their darts to last as long as possible and perform at their very best at all times.

The best way to make this happen is by regularly cleaning and sharpening your darts.

When the tips of your darts get dull, they simply will not penetrate the board, regardless of your aiming skills or how hard you throw them.

To ensure that your darts are always at their sharpest, you're going to need a good dart sharpener.

This is one of those dart accessories that beginners usually never even consider. I know when I first started playing darts, I had no idea this was even an option. I just assumed darts are supposed to last forever and if they wore down, you'd just get new ones.

But you can save a ton of money on darts just by maintaining your current ones and giving them a good sharpening every now and then.

Are they necessary: They're so cheap, it almost doesn't make sense not to have one. But keep in mind, they're only necessary for steel tip darts.

Necessity: 85%
US Darts - Round Dart Sharpener

To eliminate dull points on dart tips, you will need to continuously sharpen the tip. Every dart thrower, including beginners and professionals, should definitely consider investing in the US Darts Round Dart Sharpener. This sharpener is designed to keep the tip sharp to prevent bounce outs.

Broken Shaft And Dart Point Remover

Darts can be far more intense than most people realize.

Darts are thrown at high speed and with extreme velocity.

Should anything go wrong, there is a chance that you’ll find yourself dealing with a broken shaft or dart point.

Thankfully, this doesn’t mean that your dart needs to be replaced completely.

Instead, you just need a good broken shaft and dart point remover.

Then, you’ll be able to remove the broken shaft and fix it right away.

Don't worry, changing and fixing darts is actually super easy and quick.

How to use Elkadart Dart Accessory Broken Shaft And Dart Point Remover

Is it necessary: You probably won't need one right out of the gate. But if you start to play regularly, it's a handy accessory to keep on hand.

Dart Replacement Barrels

As you should already know, the barrel of the dart plays a crucial role in determining the grip.

With the right knurl or rings on the barrel’s surface, you’ll be able to maintain a good grip on your dart at all times. To perfect your performance, you’ll want to frequently switch up your barrels and experiment as much as possible.

I always tell the people that I instruct to never become content. Always look for ways to improve. Switching barrels is often a good starting point.

Is it necessary: If you're not happy with the barrels that came with your darts, or you just want to try something new, it's an affordable way to test some alternatives without buying a brand new set of darts.

I can easily recommend the MonkeyJack 16 Grams Replacement Barrels to anyone and everyone. These barrels are pretty amazing and they’re compatible with soft and steel tip darts.

If you want more control and a better overall experience, you need to check out these replacement barrels from MonkeyJack!

Dart Flights

Darts are generally very durable. However, I often find myself replacing the flights on my darts for one reason or another.

Sometimes, I just want to mix up the appearance. Other times, I want to switch up the feel and performance of the dart.

As someone who is new to darts, you really need to experiment with various flights. You’ll also want to show off your sense of style with a cool flight or two.

And let's be honest. The flights that come with darts tend to be a bit on the plain side in terms of design. Which is fine for utility, but why not spice things up a little bit?

You don’t need hundreds, but having a good number of flights on hand is wise.

Is it necessary: Most people change darts for aesthetics, so I wouldn't say having replacements is going to completely make you a pro dart player. But if you want to add some personality to your darts, new flights is a cheap and easy way to do it.

Necessity: 60%

Dart Accessory Kit

Beginners might not realize it initially, but darts really need love and care to remain in good condition. This is why I encourage you to purchase a dart accessory kit.

The kit should come with everything you need to keep your darts in tiptop shape, including a sharpening stone, dart wrench, and additional flights.

If you’re going to play darts regularly, get yourself a kit right away and learn how to use it.

Is it necessary: For everything you get with most dart accessory kits, I almost always recommend picking one up. You never know when you need a quick repair.

If you play darts frequently, it helps to keep some soft tip darts on hand at all times. You never know when you’re going to be forced to deal with a broken or worn out dart tip, so you’ll always want to be prepared.

After you’ve removed the point using a point puller, you’ll be able to get the other one installed right away. The process is really simple and straightforward.

Is it necessary: I always recommend keeping some extra soft tips on-hand because you never know when you're going to need them.

The Tufflex II 2BA Thread Soft Tip Dart Points are really a must for any darts player. They’re available in numerous colors, including black, green, yellow, white, and more.

They also come in packs of 100 or 1000, which is more than enough. I still have plenty leftover from a pack I bought a long time ago.

Also, the tips are equipped with a locking hole. This makes them incredibly easy to tighten and remove. I suggest all darts players pick up a pack of at least one hundred.

Steel Tip Point Converters

Have you purchased plastic pointed darts that you’ve fallen out of love with? You’re not the only one.

I first started playing darts with soft tips, but now I primarily go with steel tips. So I had a ton of soft tip darts that didn't get used nearly as much anymore.

Thankfully, some genius out there has decided to manufacture steel tip point converters.

With this accessory, you’ll be able to convert your plastic tip darts into steel darts.

It can save you a lot of money of having to go out and buy new darts, especially if you like the current barrel and flights on your soft tips and just want to switch out the point.
